One of our team, Andrea, 16 at the time, was in the dining room when her mother said with surprise, “That looks like your father’s boss coming up to the house!” Dee answered the door, there was some murmuring, and Andrea, feeling a strong premonition, grabbed her younger sister’s hand and said “Barbie, something terrible has happened.” Andrea’s mom sat them down in the living room and told them “Your father was killed in an accident”. It took Andrea many years and some maturity to reconcile with the guilt of what she said next “Mom, what is going to happen to us?!” One must forgive a child putting themselves first because this is a natural and inevitable reaction. Dee was 44, now with 5 teenagers to raise alone. Dee was intelligent, had a university education, and was working part-time as a physiotherapist, but this was the era where her husband Ken was the breadwinner. Fortunately Andrea’s Dad believed in life insurance and he had enough. His most lasting legacy for his family has been supporting all his children financially through their university years, as well as sustaining Dee for the rest of her life, including her time in private elder care.
